Scenes around the old Haida village at K'uuna Llnagaay. The lines around the totem indicate the number of potlatches help by the chief. At a potlatch the chief gives presents and acceptance is an acknowledgement of the chief's status. Emily Carr had visited this village and painted totem poles in the day. Now the poles - mortuary poles - had fallen. We saw remains of long houses with sunken sections. James, our guide, had been a watchman. The trip back was a bit rough as we bounced off the tops of 2-foot waves. |
