Trip Down Under - Sept 2010
Day 56 - Port Macquarie

Trial Bay Gaol

A rainy driving day but on the road from Coffs Harbour we stopped at the Arakoon State Conservation Area near South West Rocks to see the historic Trial Bay Gaol. The name comes from the name of a ship wrecked on the rocks nearby. The warden was not as friendly as usual and would not give us a seniors rate. The gaol was interesting - used originally as a prison and later as a WWI German POW internment camp. There was an interesting account of the POWs finding a whale washed up on shore. The ruins had a cranky resident kangaroo - we were warned away.

Port Macquarie was an interesting small town where we climbed the tower of St Thomas' Anglican Church - convict-built in 1824 and the 5th oldest church in use. Walked around the post area and encountered an impressive pelican.
