Cruise Down Under - Sept 2010
Day 17 - Pago Pago, American Samoa

This little crab closed up in its shell when I approached. It was smaller in diameter than a quarter.

Left for our tour "Myths & Legends of Tutulia" about 0845. Buses were unique - about 20 passengers and were all made of wood inside - which makes sense for an island where vehicles would tend to rust out quickly. The Samoan tour guide was "Junior" who was so soft-spoken he was impossible to hear, but he had a great grin all the time.  Made numerous stops at local buildings at scenic spots (flower-pot islands, churches, Governor's House and sea scapes). Started to rain as we got back to the Volendam so we did not try to go out walking after lunch. The tour was interesting - people live a relatively rustic life - palm trees and bananas and chickens and dogs everywhere, but we only saw one type of bird.  Did see some ugly-looking toads and a tiny salamander with a long blue tail.

This shoreline stop was a bit special. Gordie, ever seeking just the right shot was watching left for waves breaking on the rocks and did not see that he SHOULD have been looking right. People let out a big roar as a great wave came ashore sending up mountains of spray - Gordon, who heard the cheers, saw the impending spray TOWERING overhead and adrenalin-rushing, managed  to turn his back to protect the camera,  but got drenched from head to foot.... like SOAKED.  The camera had some water on it but seemed to have survived. Unfortunately at the next stop the batteries went dead and the next set died in a few minutes - so it looked like the camera was a goner. Luckily it seemed to work later in the evening. By-the-way, clothes do not dry very quickly in hot, humid climates...
