Scotch tasting experience
Scotch Malt Whiskey Society -- Dressed to Impress -- 25.54
The elegantly impressive nose has lemons and honeydew with powdery rose-scented Turkish delight, softening with water to lemon meringue, coconut milk and lavender. The palate is fruity with pink grapefruit and cooling eucalyptus, and dry with with butter biscuits and oak.
(1 of 224 bottles from a single cask -- 54.6 % alc/vol -- 18 yrs)
Glenmorangie - The Lasanta -- Coy Tain Distillery Ross-shire
Matured in bourbon casks then extra matured in sherry casks to create the rich, nutty flavour (46% alc by vol)
Highland Park Distillery - Old Malt Cask - an Orkney Malt
1 of 247 bottles from a refill sherry hogshead -- aged 27 years
Nose: Opens sweet and spicy with leather + eucalyptus + old sweetshop style
Palate: Round - balanced oak and spices + a peppery character, now drier
Finish: Long, with toffee & spices, then runs long and dry
This had a definite peaty flavour.
Scotch Malt Whiskey Society -- Honeysuckle on a bathroom wall -- 25.54
1 of 263 bottles - aged 11 years -- 58.6% alc by vol
The nose has bandages, saddle soap, vanilla and lemon rind, while honeysuckle and buddleia provide a pungent floral note. The palate is sweet and woody (sawdust, plywood, creosote) with coal-dust ad a salty tingle that roasts the tougue; benchmark Islay. In simple terms this had a very strong peaty flavour which was initially surprising on the tongue but very enjoyable - for some perhaps an acquired taste.
